چکیده

Based on the classical Pennes bioheat equation and oxygen diffusion equation, a new coupled heat-mass transfer model for characterizing the cerebral circulatory arrest is proposed. Two cooling approaches (the surface cooling and volumetric cooling) are applied to analyze the effect of hypothermia on the transient temperature and the oxygen consumption rate in different regions of brain. It is shown that the surface cooling contributes little to depress the oxygen consumption, which received few attentions before. As an alternative, the volumetric cooling will significantly reduce the oxygen consumption rate in the brain, thus prolong the patients’ survival time. The results, which are close in agreement with the previous experimental data, may aid to find more efficient treatments on the brain hypothermia resuscitation.

Influence of systemic hypothermia on the myocardial oxygen tension during extracorporeal circulation: comparative study in German Landrace pigs.

During extracorporeal circulation (ECC) controlled hypothermia is a common method of myocardial protection due to a reduction of the myocardial oxygen consumption. Although the beneficial aspects of hypothermia on the myocardial metabolism have been widely demonstrated the effect of hypothermia on the myocardial oxygen tension (PmyO2) is unclear. For this reason the PmyO2 of German Landrace pig...

Cooling responses in shivering and non-shivering dogs during induced hypothermia.

1. Hypothermia to a temperature of 30 degrees C was induced in both shivering and non-shivering groups of dogs. 2. There was a sustained increase in oxygen consumption in the dogs allowed to shiver and this was up to 300% greater than the oxygen consumption in the relaxed dogs. 3. The increased tissue requirement for oxygen was met both by increased cardiac output and increased oxygen extractio...

Cerebral blood flow and cerebral oxygen consumption during hypothermia.

C URRENTLY there is widespread interest in the physiologic effects of cold, and in the use of hypothermia with surgery (I, 2). Although no gross neurologic derangements have been observed following the application of this technique in man and experimental animals (3, 4), it seemed appropriate that a special study be made of the effects of hypothermia on cerebral physiology. Cerebral blood flow,...
